Does anybody do any blogging paid or otherwise? I'm trying to figure out what a blog actually is... Is it a persons personal website that they just write about what they want or if you are a paid blogger are you on someone elses site writing???

I do. A blog can be anything that you want it to be. It can be a recap of your day or life, it can be an article about something that you find interesting or it can be a rant about something, for example. That is what makes a blog so great is the diversity.

I do get paid to blog for a few different sites and I do something different for each one. I also just recently started a personal blog.

There are many great sites if you are interested in starting your own blog.

Thanks for the info!! So I don't have to have my own site right? If I do paid blogging then I do it on the payers site, correct?
So how would I get started and what sites are good?

Well that is the catch 22 about blogging. To get a job, most people want to see your blog.
Personally I went with http://wordpress.com/ because almost every ad that I see for paid bloggers asks or Wordpress experience so I figured that I might as well get it. The basic Wordpress blog is free and you post whenever you want to which is wonderful.

Then I would check http://jobs.problogger.net/ as you get more and more posts. I found one of my paid gigs on here and the other on Craigslist

Is there anything wrong with writing a blog under a pen name? I would like to write quite freely about what I really think but honestly I am a private person.

I blog (and a lot)! And no, I get paid nothing. But it promotes my writing and my website and me. Which--being an aspiring novelist--is what I want it to do. ;-)

To start, decide about what you want to write about and then start writing! I know it seems simple, but the more focused you are the better... and sure, you can use a pen name. I don't right now, but there are days I wish I did. :-) Many do it, and it works for them! good luck!
