Ragu is keeping me up at night

Over at my other blogSpoonfed, I'm musing about genetically modified foods.

Specifically, about those things in my cupboards and freezer made with corn oil, or canola oil, or soy products. Dr. Oz (who everyone knows is the most trustworthy Doctor on the planet) had a guest on his XM radio show talking about genetically modified crops in the US, and how 90% of our packaged foods are made with genetically modified corn, canola or soy.

And like it or not, we're a nation of packaged food eaters. No one will admit to it, but just watch people in the check-out lines at King Soopers.

There's no regulation of genetically modified foods except for the Organic label. Organic means it's not genetically modified.

If you take a can of Ragu spaghetti sauce, for instance, you'll see it's made with canola oil. Pretty much a dead giveaway that it's made with genetically modified canola oil, although there's nothing in the U.S. that says it must be labeled as such (unlike Europe). Take a can of Ragu light, however, and it's made with olive oil. Olive oil is safe, it hasn't yet been genetically modified.

See, a little bit of knowledge can be dangerous. Enough to wake me up at 5 am. Anybody else worry about these things?

You are not alone! I constantly worry about the food choices for my family. And lets face it- what would we do without our staples like Ragu that sit on the shelf waiting to save the day! A quick little vinagrette? Let's be real, grab the wishbone. I think we absolutely need to be informed but I try not to get too worked up about it and go with the old everything in moderation. Works in a lot of scenarious, huh?
