It's 13 days post-election and I am finally convinced that Senator Barack Obama is truly our 44th President. Somewhere inside of me, I felt like a cruel joke had taken place and we would awake to a Gore-esque defeat, you know the kind that says, "You won the popular vote and Florida-oops not Florida" and we would all be making plans to move to Canada. Now that President-Elect Barack Obama has resigned his Senate seat as of Sunday, November 16, 2008; it's Official to ME!! Because, a brother; qualified or not, will never quit a job without having another lined up! I am elated that in my lifetime I will know and experience the first African-American President of these United States of America and am clearly having a Michelle Obama moment, in that, this is one of the times that I am proud to call myself American. When I see those beautiful brown little girls it seals the deal for me, as a mother of three, two of which are beautiful brown girls with ethnically profound names and cornrows and twists; as well as a handsome son whose name speaks to his destiny, I am secure in my deliberate reminders to my children, that they too can be anything they want, if they take advantage of education and seize opportunity! The days of shying away from names that indicate where you are ethnically, socially and emotionally have been expunged by a husband and wife who consciously decided to give their daughters names laced in pride and purpose. I am refreshed that with or without Texas, Alabama, and so many other "red" states we have shown that we are not "waiting on the world to change" in contrast, we are the CHANGE that we want to see in the world! So as I pack up my kids everyday and head off to school, with veggie-friendly lunches in hand and afro-puffs adorning their hair; I am encouraged that a CHANGE has come to the WHITE HOUSE and it is a welcomed addition! TOUCHE... President and First Lady Obama! The wait is over!
